HISTORICAL NOVEL BOOK REVIEW

 

Each of you are required to read 2 historical novels and prepare a report of the book plus a comparison of the same time period and characters as covered by a standard historical source.  A historical novel is the account of a famous person, an event, or time period written in story form.  The information in a historical novel may be fictional. 

 

GUIDELINES

 

1.  I must approve all historical novels.

 

2.  All books must be standard length (200 pages or more) and at your reading level.

 

3.  All reports must be neatly typed in a 10-12 point font size and double spaced.

Structure of the paper:

 

            a.  Summary of novel:

                        A brief summary, written in essay form,

                         describing the time period, plot and main

                         characters.  Maximum length 1/2 page

 

            b.  Summary from a standard historical source:                

                                A brief report from a standard historical

                         source, written in essay form, on the time

                         period and characters (when possible)

                         presented in the novel.

 

            c.  Comparison of the two sources:

                        What historical or political differences did

                        you find when comparing the novel to the

                        historical source? What type of information

                        did you find in the book that you did not find

                        in the historical text and vice versa?

 

            d.  Your opinion of the historical novel:

                        What is your opinion of the novel?  What were

                        its strengths and weaknesses? Would you

                        recommend this book to others? Did the novel

                        provide an accurate insight into history that the

                        standard text did not?
