MEDIA JOURNAL

As part of our class, you are required to keep a media journal. Daily you will be given time to read the newspaper. The provided newspaper (Seattle Post Intelligencer) is the only resource you will be allowed to use for this assignment.

Criteria of the assignment:

Daily: You are to read at least one article per day from the PI. After you are finished reading, you are to write a response to what you read. Each response should include: the title of the article, the date published, what you think about the article and why. This response is to be in your spiral notebook which needs to be brought to class daily.

Weekly:

¨ You are to select one of your entries from the week to write an extended response.

¨ Every entry must be dated. (This must be the date the article was published.)

¨ Every entry must have the article that you read pasted into your journal.

¨ For each entry you are to write a summary of the article. (For example: Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How?) This must be written in paragraph format.

¨ For each entry you are to write the significance of the article. For example: How does this affect me? Our country? The world? Why is this important?

¨ For each entry you are to write a personal reflection. For example: How does this make you feel? Why? (This is the majority of your entry.) I am most interested in what you think and why you think it. You are also to include specific examples from the article that back up your view.

¨ Every entry must also have two “cool words”. Cool Words are words that you have no idea what they mean. You need to write the word, what you think it means, the actual definition and then use the word correctly in a sentence/paragraph. (You are to do this even if you know all of the words in the article.

How you will be graded:

Weekly entries will be graded by the following criteria:

2pts – Date, Heading, Article pasted into journal

3pts – Summary of the article

3pts – Significance of event

10pts – Personal Reflection

5pts – Cool Words

2pts – Conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation, fluency)

25pts possible

Your media journals are due every Friday at the beginning of the period.
