Unit Six

6)       Lathe- you will use the handout from the file cabinet.

a)       Read units 1, 2 and 3 from the handout and answer the self-evaluation questions and the end of each unit.

i)         You will then practice grinding lathe tool bits using 5/16” square stock.

ii)       Start using lathe to make your hammer handle.  Mount handle between centers and machine the material until the handle is .750” in diameter.

b)       Materials needed: one piece of 7/8” round stock 9” long.

 

 

7)       Mill- you will use the gray book “General- Industrial Machine Shop”

a)       Read units 1, 2 and 3 from the handout and answer the self-evaluation questions and the end of each unit. 

b)       Get hammer plans out of the file cabinet.

c)       Set up vice on milling machine and use angled jig to hold your hammerhead.  Calculate how far (number of turns of the handle) you have to raise the table to remove .300” from the hammerhead.

i)         Machine cross peen head on hammer.

ii)       Drill a 5/16” hole as shown in the plans and then use a 3/8”-16 tap to make threads for the handle.

d)       Materials needed: One piece of ¾” square stock 4” long.
