Phase I: Investigation
  • Studied student reading comprehension scores on ITBS and WASL
  • Searched for a research-based reading approach that would mesh with the Six Trait Writing model
  • Formed a reading committee
  • Began reading professional literature and research

Phase II: Planning
  • Identified effective instructional model: strategy instruction
  • Gained overwhelming support from the entire FMS staff
  • Began intensive study of strategy instruction
  • Planned for and presented a three year plan for implementing strategy instruction

Phase III: Initial Implementation Spring & Fall 2002
  •  Staff committed to building wide reading and writing focus and monthly strategy instruction training
  • Reading committee conducted monthly training sessions
  • Staff and students kicked off the year with “Old Favorites”
  • Three reading committee members attended PEBC National Fall Study
