Transition from Middle School to High School

Middle Schools were created to help with the transition from childhood to adolescence.  Statistics for middle school students show a drop in grades and attendance, increased incidence of depression, and a focus on self criticism.  There are many ways parents can lower these risks for their kids.

Firstly, be involved in your children’s middle school experience.  This leads to continued positive outcomes in the high school years.  Studies show that parent involvement leads to higher student achievement, better adjustment, and decreased risk of dropping out of school.

Your child is both excited and nervous about the move to high school.  They are scared about things such as being teased and getting lost in a large school.  You can help them to have a successful transition by:

·        Helping to develop solid skills in how to study and how to manage time.

·        Be directly involved in the course decisions you eighth grader will make for ninth grade classes.

·        Help them to be positive and confident in who they are.

Helping to make a smooth transition from middle to high school can reduce your child’s risk of abusing substances and dropping out of school.
