Family Science Night:
Truly a “Hands-On” Affair!

Families worked together to solve inquiry –type questions.
On February 24, 2004 the Forks’ community was treated to a science event at the elementary school to highlight what is done throughout the school during the year in the area of science in grades K-8.  Also highlighted was the use of the new science non-fiction tradebooks being used in many classrooms to help students become better readers and better scientists! These books are part of a Toyota Tapestry Grant  5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and teachers are participating in this school year. The use of the science tradebooks in combination with a focus on inquiry-based science is helping students become more scientifically literate, and more literate readers.

Family Science Night was supported in part by a NASA Mini-Grant and a Toyota Tapestry Grant.

These  participants figured out how to put a circuit together to make a bulb light.   Tradebooks on Circuitry can assist students in answering  questions they have.

Einstein, the rat, approves of the tradebooks his students use to learn more about him….and to learn to become better readers.  Einstein belongs to the 7th/8th science teacher, Jody Carroll, who brought him as part of the 1st Grade's Animal unit.

The 5th grade teachers made sure families knew what the Tapestry Grant had brought to their classroom in the way of new tradebooks.

These boys show off both the Florida King Snake snake, Hobs, and the books they read on snakes and reptiles in their classrooms.  Hobs belongs to 6th grade teacher, Les Stewart, who brought him to Science Night to show students all about snakes.
